Healthy Gaston: A Community Wellness Program
The Healthy Gaston program, led by the Gaston County YMCA, partners with local businesses, organizations, and churches to promote overall health and wellness. Focusing on physical activity, nutrition, and mental well-being, the program provides tailored wellness resources and activities, such as fitness classes, health challenges, and educational workshops. By engaging workplaces and faith communities, Healthy Gaston fosters a culture of health, encouraging individuals to improve their well-being both at work and in their daily lives.
Key Pillars of the Program
A. Physical Activity
- On-Site Fitness Classes: Offer businesses and churches the opportunity to host group fitness classes like yoga, strength training, or walking groups on-site during convenient times.
- Congregation & Workplace Fitness Challenges: Implement challenges where businesses and churches compete internally or against each other in activities like step challenges or group exercise participation.
- Walking Clubs: Establish walking clubs at churches and businesses, encouraging members and employees to take time during the week to stay active.
- Community Fitness Days: Partner with churches to host "Faith & Fitness" days, promoting group exercise sessions after church services or community events.
B. Nutrition
- Healthy Potluck and Meal Planning: Work with churches to incorporate healthier food options at church gatherings, potlucks, and community meals. Provide churches with meal planning guides.
- Lunch & Learn Seminars: Host nutrition seminars for businesses and churches, focusing on topics such as meal prep, portion control, and food budgeting.
- Healthy Eating Challenges: Encourage workplaces and congregations to adopt healthier eating habits through challenges like "Meatless Mondays" or "Sugar-Free Weeks."
- Partnership with Local Grocers: Provide churches and businesses with discount codes or vouchers for healthy grocery options in collaboration with local markets.
C. Mental Wellness
- Faith-Based Wellness Workshops: Offer mental health and wellness workshops that incorporate faith-based teachings, helping church members manage stress, anxiety, and improve emotional well-being.
- Mindfulness & Prayer Sessions: Work with churches to integrate mindfulness practices, meditative prayer, and relaxation techniques into regular worship services or as separate events.
- Workplace Stress Management: Provide stress reduction workshops for businesses, focusing on work-life balance and mental well-being.
