Safety Around Water Program with the Gaston County Family YMCA

The Safety Around Water program at the Gaston County Family YMCA is a critical initiative aimed at reducing the number of drownings and increasing water safety awareness in the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is a leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths for children ages 5-14. The YMCA recognizes the importance of teaching children and adults water safety skills to prevent drowning and other water-related injuries.

The Safety Around Water program is a free, eight-day program offered to children ages 5-12 who do not know how to swim or have limited swimming ability. The program teaches basic water safety skills, including floating, treading water, and swimming techniques. In addition to teaching children how to swim, the program also includes education on water safety rules and best practices, such as never swimming alone, always wearing a life jacket, and never diving in shallow water.

The program is taught by certified instructors who have extensive training in water safety and teaching swimming skills. Each session is limited to a small group of participants to ensure that each child receives personalized attention and instruction.

The Safety Around Water program is more than just a swim lesson. It is a program that teaches children and adults valuable skills that could save their lives. The YMCA is committed to reducing the number of drownings and increasing water safety awareness in the community. By participating in the program, children and adults alike will gain the skills and confidence they need to stay safe in and around water.

The Gaston County Family YMCA offers a wide range of programs and services designed to promote health and well-being in the community. From swim lessons to fitness classes to youth sports, the YMCA is committed to providing opportunities for individuals and families to lead healthy, active lifestyles.
