National Nutrition Month: Building Balanced Habits That Last

March is National Nutrition Month

March is a time to refocus on balanced eating, practical nutrition skills, and habits that support long-term health.

Nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s not about perfection or restriction — it’s about building balanced meals, understanding what’s on your plate, and making small, consistent choices that add up over time.

Here are a few tools from Nutrition HealthWorks to help you build confidence in your nutrition this month.

Build a Balanced Plate 🥗

One of the simplest ways to support overall health is by visualizing your plate.

The Build Your Own Healthy Plate guide is based on the MyPlate framework and highlights five essential food groups:

  • Fruits

  • Vegetables

  • Grains

  • Protein

  • Dairy

A helpful reminder from the guide:

  • Protein = palm of your hand

  • Grains = fist

  • Vegetables = two cupped hands

  • Fruits = one cupped hand

  • Dairy = thumb size or 1 cup

Balanced meals don’t need to be complicated — they just need to include variety.

Learn to Read a Nutrition Label 🏷️

Understanding food labels is a powerful skill that makes grocery shopping easier and more intentional.

The Reading a Nutrition Label guide walks through:

  • Checking serving sizes

  • Understanding % Daily Value

  • Watching saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar

  • Looking for fiber and key nutrients

Remember: 5% Daily Value or less is considered low, and 20% or more is high. This makes it easier to quickly scan and compare products.

Debunk Common Nutrition Myths 💬

Nutrition advice online can be overwhelming. The Nutrition Myth Buster handout helps clarify common misconceptions, including:

  • “Carbs make you gain weight.”

  • “You need to detox your body.”

  • “Sugar makes you hyper.”

  • “Frozen and canned produce isn’t as nutritious.”

Balanced eating is about overall patterns — not eliminating entire food groups or chasing trends.
