Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Making a Difference: Easy Ways to Serve in Gaston County in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

We’re honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. this week by uplifting his words of wisdom. We encourage everyone to take part in #MLKDayofService in their own ways to continue to honor Dr. King’s words.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Gaston County is brimming with opportunities for individuals to make a positive impact through acts of service. Whether you're looking to volunteer your time locally or contribute from the comfort of your home, there are numerous charities and organizations that could use your support. Let's explore some simple yet impactful ways you can take part in an act of service right here in Gaston County.

  1. Donate to the Gaston County Family YMCA

At the Y, we believe everyone deserves the same opportunities, no matter who you are or where you’re from. That’s why we work tirelessly to close gaps and bridge divides.

Your support can make all the difference. When you give to the Y, you partner with us to tackle our community’s most critical needs. Whether providing mentorship support, preventing hunger during the summer months, educating all age groups in physical wellness, removing barriers to childcare, walking alongside individuals and families to be healthy, connected, and successful, we are building a stronger community and sustaining the Y for generations to come.

  2. Catherine's House Transitional Housing Linen Drive

The Stowe Family YMCA is partnering with the local chapter of Catherine’s House to collect brand new linens for the residents of Catherine’s House. The Catherine's House Linen Drive provides warmth and dignity through the generosity of soft bedsheets, towels, and blankets to women and children who are in transitional housing. Your contribution creates cozy havens and brightens futures for those in need.

Donations will be collected in the Stowe YMCA lobby collection bin through Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

  3. Salvation Army of Gaston and Lincoln Counties

Support the work of the Salvation Army in our area by making a donation or donating a vehicle. Learn more and donate on the Salvation Army of Gaston and Lincoln Counties website.

  4. Meals on Wheels Gaston: Keeping Seniors at Home Where They Want to Be

At the core of the Meals on Wheels service is a nutritious meal, companionship and a watchful eye on the health and safety of Gaston County seniors. For those who can still venture out into their communities we serve at seven sites scattered throughout Gaston County.

Meals on Wheels Gaston focuses on caring for individuals whose diminished mobility makes it hard to shop for food, prepare meals or socialize with others. We serve adults age 60 or better. People who are mobile enough join others for meals in a group setting, while others that are less mobile may qualify for home delivery. Learn more and sign up to volunteer.

  5. Gaston County Volunteer Center: Connect with the Volunteer Center to discover a range of volunteer opportunities tailored to your skills and interests. From supporting local events to assisting at food drives, there's a chance for everyone to get involved.

  6. Gaston Hospice: Consider becoming a hospice volunteer to provide companionship and support to individuals and families facing end-of-life care. Your presence can bring comfort and solace during challenging times.

Simple Tasks Anyone Can Do at Home:

  1. Create Care Packages: Put together care packages with essential items such as toiletries, non-perishable foods, and warm clothing. Distribute these packages to local shelters or organizations supporting individuals experiencing homelessness.

  2. Write Letters of Encouragement: Brighten someone's day by writing letters of encouragement to residents of local nursing homes, hospitals, or veterans' facilities. Your kind words can have a meaningful impact on individuals facing isolation.

  3. Craft for a Cause: Use your creative skills to make handmade items like blankets, scarves, or masks. Donate these items to local charities, shelters, or hospitals to provide comfort and warmth to those in need.

  4. Virtual Tutoring or Mentoring: Offer your expertise by volunteering for virtual tutoring or mentoring sessions. Many local organizations are seeking individuals to support students in need of educational guidance. Project Sunshine is a great place to start.

In Gaston County, there are countless ways for individuals to engage in acts of service, both in-person and from the comfort of their homes. By connecting with local charities, participating in volunteer programs, or undertaking simple tasks that make a difference, you can contribute to the well-being of the community.
