Active Older Adults

We value the opportunity to serve Older Active Adults in our community. Some of the offerings for our Active Older Adults will be on site at the William J. Pharr Family YMCA, while others will be available at the Stowe YMCA. As the Pharr YMCA grows, look for more opportunities on site to enjoy the "golden years" of life with amazing Y folks!!!!

The YMCA is full of active older adults who are on the move and on the go!  O.A.K.R.A. is for all “seniors” who like to stay busy learning new things, traveling, socializing and generally having fun!

Lunch and Learn – Meets each month with the exception of summer months. Lunch and Learn has hosted informational speakers such as dieticians, cardiologist, orthopedics, urologist, etc.  Some lunch and learns are pot-luck-meals and others are bring a covered dish.  All are welcome! You do not have to be a YMCA member to participate.  Please call the front desk for current monthly information.

Trips – Our O.A.K.R.A. group has been to The Biltmore House, Stowe Botanical Gardens, Chimney Rock, Charleston, Blowing Rock and Black Mountain.  Trips are priced reasonably.  Our next trip will be in December. We will be going to Old Salem, the date to be announced later this month. You do not have to be a YMCA member to participate in O.A.K.R.A. trips.  All are welcome.

The Wild Red Roses of the Y – Red Hat Society – New Chapter started on October 19, 2006.  You must be a woman of 50 or over (or you may be a Pink Hatter under 50), and you must attend functions in full regalia, (red hat, purple outfit for women 50 and over or pink hast and lavender outfit for women who are younger), invite other women into your chapter.  You might give the person you invited a gift with something pertaining to The Red Hat Society.  The spirit of the society for bids that we make rules, the group is a fun way to meet new people.  All are welcome!

Line Dancing – Meets every Wednesday at 12 Noon to 1:00 p.m. Learn fun and easy line dances.  The group learns the Macarena; New York, New York; The Electric Slide; Elvira; Waltz Across Texas and many more.  Special O.A.K.R.A. line dancing tee shirts are available.  Come on Wednesday and join the fun!

Ceramics – Meets every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12 Noon.  All items purchased include all firings and any paints or stains needed to complete the project.  Prices are very reasonable.  Instructor Sue Bullock from Kings Mountain.  Come explore a new craft and meet a fun group of people!
